The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute Hub will be located at UCLA, University of California, Los Angles as recently announced by President Obama. This hub will join more than 200 industry, academic and governmental partners with UCLA to formulate cutting-edge programs in manufacturing.
The Hub’s emphasis will be on the use of advanced sensors to reduce the cost of manufacturing by improving the efficiency and cutting the usage of energy.
The center will sponsor projects in various areas of interest, but will focus on a few special topics such as:
1. Smart Collaborative robotics,
2. Pioneering next-generation manufacturing techniques for repairing and replacing cells and tissues,
3. Fundamentally redesigning processes used for manufacturing chemicals, refining fuels, and producing other high value products,
4. Redesign of a focus of reducing the total lifetime use of energy in manufactured materials.
The Industry Partners include a veritable list of the most innovative companies in the world and the United States, including Aerospace Corporation, Google, Lanza Tech, Microsoft, Northrup Grumman and Goodyear.
The choice of Southern California as the locus of the hub underscores the advantageous position of California as the leader in new technologies and industrial processes.
